In the UK and some other Commonwealth nations, in some erstwhile USSR nations, Ireland, and in Denmark, a higher level of research doctorate is awarded. It is known as higher doctorate. The basis for award of higher doctorates is very high standard of published research submitted formally. DSc/ScD (Doctor of Science) and DLitt/LittD (Doctor of Letters) awarded by phd universities in the UK are higher doctorates. In Denmark, dr.theol. (Doctor of Theology), which is a higher doctorate, is in vogue. Such higher doctorates may also be awarded to honor a person's contributions and achievements in a specific area.
